Lots of drivers put off fixing a cracked windshield because they're afraid of one thing: a higher insurance bill. Here's what you should know before you decide.
Glass claims aren't at-fault accidents
Most windshield claims go through comprehensive coverage. That covers things like stones, weather and vandalism, which aren't collisions and aren't your fault. In Ontario, at-fault accidents are what usually drive the biggest premium increases.
That said, every insurer is different. A comprehensive claim still goes on your claims history, and some insurers look at how many claims you've made overall. One glass claim is rarely a problem. Several claims in a short period might be.
When claiming makes sense
- The replacement costs well above your deductible
- Your car has a camera or sensors behind the windshield that need recalibration (this adds to the cost, and insurance usually covers it)
- You haven't made other claims recently
When paying yourself might be better
- The total is close to or below your deductible
- You've made several claims in the last few years
Not sure? Ask before you claim
Call your insurer or broker and ask how a comprehensive glass claim affects your policy. You can also call us. We'll give you the full price for the job, so you can compare it against your deductible before anything is filed.
FAQ
Will a chip repair affect my rates?
Chip repairs are low cost, and many insurers treat them differently from full replacements. Check with your insurer.
Does it matter who replaces the glass?
No. You can choose a qualified shop, and your claim works the same way.
