Not every damaged windshield needs to be replaced. Here's how to tell the difference, and how insurance usually handles each.
When a repair usually works
- The chip is smaller than a loonie
- A crack is shorter than a few inches
- The damage isn't directly in the driver's line of sight
- The damage isn't at the edge of the glass
A repair takes about 30 minutes and stops the damage from spreading.
When you need a replacement
- The crack is longer than a few inches or is spreading
- The damage is in the driver's line of sight
- The crack reaches the edge of the windshield
- There are several chips or cracks
- The damage sits where a camera or sensor is mounted
How insurance handles each
Repairs are inexpensive, and many insurers prefer them because they cost less. Replacements are usually covered under comprehensive or all perils coverage, and you pay your deductible.
Don't wait on a chip
Toronto winters are hard on glass. Cold mornings, defrosters and potholes can turn a small chip into a full crack overnight. Fixing a chip early can save you a full replacement.
